Staff Spotlight – Nigel Halton
Welcome to the first of our Staff Spotlight interviews, today we’re chatting to NPS Group’s Health and Safety Manager, Nigel Halton. The series is aimed at giving our customers and visitors a better understanding of our goals, vision and to get to know the NPS team. Let’s jump straight in.
How long have you been at NPS?
I joined NPS in November 2018, following the acquisition by Richard and Julie.
What is your role at NPS?
Health, Safety and Environmental Manager, I’m responsible for both NPS and Atkinson Print sites.
What did you do before NPS?
Prior to working at NPS I spent 14 years working as Health, Safety and Environmental Manager at a Commercial Testing Laboratory based in the North of England which employed 115 staff. During my time at the laboratory I successfully implemented OHSAS 18001 – Occupational Health & Safety Standards and 14001 Environmental Standards.
What attracted you to the business?
A new challenge in a totally different industry. I think it’s key to keep things fresh and take on new challenges to continue to develop new skills.
We’ve recently started providing PPE to several of our customers, is that something you had experience with before?
Holding a recognised Diploma in Occupational Safety & Health and coming from a laboratory background, I have a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to selection and issue of PPE for a vast range of applications. I’m also qualified to ‘fit test’ Respiratory Protective Equipment.
How have you found the transition into sourcing and distributing PPE?
Due to the current global crisis, offering PPE products to customers came naturally to NPS due to both mine and our MD’s extensive knowledge of PPE requirements in the laboratory environment. While offering these products we’ve found that that due to the global shortage of PPE, a lot of unscrupulous dealers are trying to pass off ‘sub-standard’ PPE which offers very little or no protection to the end user. This puts both the end user and others in the immediate environment at risk of potentially contracting or spreading the virus. We can therefore assure that all PPE supplied by NPS is certified and meets all appropriate standards.
We’ve continued to work throughout the pandemic, has it been challenging from a Health and Safety perspective?
The Covid-19 Pandemic has certainly been a challenge and will continue to be a challenge for every industry until a vaccine is found. We’ve followed our disaster recovery plan and implemented the necessary safety controls to ensure continued safe operation throughout the pandemic. We have a fantastic team who have adapted to the changes quickly whilst keeping production at normal levels.
How are we adapting in production and the offices to ensure we can keep production and service levels at a high standard?
By working together as a multi-disciplined team, we can ensure our High Standards are meticulously maintained and our customer needs and expectations are not only met, but exceeded.
